Since last year, my son is a proud owner of a fresh water fish tank!
And he wanted a Quilt with fresh water fishes!
Altough I already designed a few fishes for my books "Patchwork Animals" and "Patchwork Animals 2", they were mainly sea fished. This was a reason, to look more closely at our new roommates, especially since they are swimming more or less right in front of my nose! :-)

The Bom 2010 is divided in 8 x 8 blocks, each 6" (approx. 15cm).
The final size without border is 48" x 48" (approx. 1.20 x 1.20m).
Since in nature, fishes differ in their sizes, the blocks are different in size, too! But due to the partitioning, they are easy to combine without Y-seams!

Fabric requirement:

I used Fossil Fern fabric, they are still my favorite fabrics since the don't have a direction and the neutral fern motive fits for water as well as for air, rocks and other plants!
But there are also many other suitable background fabrics and I'm excited for your solution! :-)

Here my usage as a rough guide: If you start with PP, you should buy some more fabrics to avoid trouble when a block isn`t successful at first start! However, if you cut your pieces in a fabric econimic way, you will probably need much less!

2.50m (100") medium blue for the water
0.50m (20") very light blue for the air
0.70m (30") dark brown or grey for the dark rocks
0.50m (20") light brown for the light rocks
0,50m (20") shining green for the water plants

Maybe a little bit more, if you want to continue with the fabrics on the border.

Just as a hint: On square quilts, I like to use borders by Jinny Beyer, it results - if you don`t fear corner letters and work precisely - a nice border solution, which reminds of an image frame!
